NFL: Denver Broncos 24 Buffalo Bills 17 recap and analysis

Buffalo visited the AFC West leader Denver Broncos on sunday afternoon, as the Bills still fight for a postseason place this year. They beat Cleveland at home last week and at 7-5, Buffalo was still tied with 6 other teams for one of the Wild Card spot.
The first half was a battle of heavy defense, as two of the best running defense squared off in Colorado last. But, Denver opened the score on a nice drive, punctuated by a C.J Anderson running TD, who just started his work in this game. QB Orton was not able to march down the field, as his top target WR rookie Sammy Watkins was well covered early by CB Aqib Talib, the new top CB of the Broncos since the departure of Champ Bailey. But Dan Carpenter kicked a 44 yard field goal to make this one a 7-3 ballgame. And the Bills D, one of the best in the business really started to create problem to Peyton Manning and all the Denver offense. On a play action, he totally under threw WR Sanders and CB Graham picked the ball. Buffalo didn’t do anything with the ball on their hands, and Manning got the ball back. At midfield and on a 3 and 7, Bills CB Gilmore absolutely crushed Sanders and was called for pass interference, as tempers started to flare between the two teams. The Broncos QB took advantage of the penalty to preserved the drive and on a 3rd and goal, C.J Anderson, the guy out of Cal scored his second TD of the day : the score was 14 to 3 at the half.
Denver started with the football the second half and RB Juwan Thompson gained 47 big yards on an oustisde run on a 3 and 1 to get the offense going. After connecting with Welker and Sanders, Manning let Anderson finish once again the drive with a TD, his 3rd of the afternoon. Against a top run defense, Anderson wasn’t superb with 58 yards gained in 21 carries, but he got the job done in the red zone for Manning and co. But Buffalo keep fighting and really, their defense did absolutely what they have to do, as Gilmore intercepted Manning, who was trying to find his top receiver, WR Thomas. QB Kyle Orton got the ball back and he found his receivers to move the change, but once again, the former Broncos was picked in opposite territory by CB Chris Harris, as he was trying to connect with WR Woods on a double move to the outside. Denver was unable to unable to finish this game, as their new kicker Barth connected on a 50 yard field goal. And Orton keep fighting, as Sammy Watkins started to show up, and the rookie out of Clemson catches some superb grabs, one of a superb double move to freeze up rookie CB Bradley Roby. The top WR finished the day with 7 grabs for 127 yards on the day. After a pass almost intercepted by SS David Bruton in the end zone that will be resulted in a pick 6, Orton found WR Hogan on a WR screen for a TD on a 3rd and goal. Denver got the ball back but didn’t do anything with it and Orton continued to fight. With under 2min to go, he connected with TE Chandler two or three times up the middle, and he connected with him in the hand zone, but the refs called a pass interference. Orton bounced back and got in the end zone thanks to a QB sneak, to make this one a 24-17 score for the Broncos. Gay tried an inside quick, but the ball was recovered by Denver, who won the ballgame 24 to 17.
Despite 3 turnovers, the Broncos won their third straight game since changing from a pass-oriented attack to a run-heavy offense. The Bills are now 7-6 and with Pittsburgh and Baltimore winning on sunday, they are now in trouble reaching the postseason. Denver owns right now the best record in the AFC with the New England Patriots, who also won in San Diego on sunday. I give my MVP to C.J Anderson, who was not great but who scored 3 TD and really helped Manning, who broke his streak of 51 straight games with a TD passes, 3 shy of Drew Brees.
