Houston Astros, a complete team with high ambitions

The Houston Astros have faced the 2018 season with the difficult goal of the repeat, a goal made immediately more difficult by the improvements of their divisional opponents, Angels above all. With a division that sees all the teams over quota .500 except the derelicts Rangers is a stimulus but also a source of great pressure for a team still very young and this may in the long run penalize them a little especially if the Angels continue to keep this pace . In the offseason the retirement of Carlos Beltran has left a hole in the lineup of both experience and clutch hitting, his substitute Derek Fisher is not performing as expected and in general the performance to the batting plate of the champions in office remains suspect with the only exceptions of Reddick with already 6 homerun and the usual Altuve accompanied by the scorching Correa both well above quota .300. The department where Houston has improved the most is certainly the rotation of the starting pitchers that with the arrival by trade from the Pirates of Gerrit Cole, a Cole who has a record of 2-1 with an ERA of 1.29 knit Astros, to keep him company in what is the best rotation of the MLB starters are: Verlander with a record of 4-0 and an ERA of 1.36, Keuchel 1-3 and an ERA of 3.10, Morton 3-0 and an ERA of 1.86 and finally McCullers that with a record of 4-1 (child mainly due to a more than solid run support) closes the rotation with an ERA of 3.71. The front office work of this team was not only fabulous in drafting, exchanging and growing the right players but also by trusting a manager like AJ Hinch who despite the very little experience (only 2 seasons in Arizona) was able to create a great group and in my opinion his greatest merit was to know how to put the players in the right place in the order of joke. An atypical batting order in general that of Houston that sees a leadoff like George Springer who is fast enough but who has a power of number four, Carlos Correa from clean-up is another atypical thing since only he and Didi Gregorious it's the shortstop that beat in that position throughout the MLB. Another very underrated aspect of Hinch is knowing how to handle the bullpen, he has the courage to change the roles inside the bullpen like no other manager in this league, see the playoffs of last year when Ken Giles struggled did not hesitate to put Chris Devenski in his role. These Astros are one of the most complete teams in recent years, counting on an excellent rotation and a deep bullpen with many players able to contribute at a high level, also their lineup can hurt in various ways having multi-dimensional players like Altuve , Springer and Correa. In addition, the versatility of many of their players in defensively playing more positions gives him better adaptation to the needs of a long regular season avoiding excessive stress to the players in order to get fresher for the playoffs. Playoffs in which I expect the Astros as winners in the AL West although the battle with LA and Seattle will be intense until the end.

NHL Western Conference playoffs first round recap and analysis

Las Vegas Golden Knights vs. Los Angeles Kings (4-0)

We left on a 3-0 in favor of the Nevada team and nothing has changed in race 4 where the Kings have surrendered in the worst way, without scoring, putting too much on the physical plane and with very few ideas of construction of the game. Oh yes, it ended 4-0 for the surprising Knights who won with a score of 1-0 also in the second race of LA closing the series with a stunning 4-0. Amazing but really ugly to see, many, too many mistakes in the fundamentals for both teams that have made the games of this series truly unwatchable, the playoffs are expected to see an intense hockey but also a technical thing that was seen only for very few traits and that leaves neutral fans really disappointed. The only thing that did not disappoint but rather, an excellent level is the goaltending, where Quick and Fleury have battled with really high level parades and their merit in the very low scores is to be taken into account. As for the Kings, the first to disappoint was Kopitar (candidate for the HART Trophy) who probably played one of the worst playoff series of his career, failing in his role as leader and captain of this team, the only extenuating factor for the team. Slovenian is the poor attitude of this team to score goals and support it, which in my opinion coach Stevens will have to answer in this long and burning offseason. On the other hand the Knights have tried to everyone that besides knowing how to score a lot of goals as a success in the regular season they also know how to defend and be very physical that they were very much in doubt about before this series. The good news is that they passed the round winning the first set of playoffs in their history, the ugly is that there are the Sharks on the horizon after a dominant victory against the Ducks where unlike the Knights against the Kings have been able to express the good hockey in both halves. Reason for which Las Vegas if he wants to continue to make the road will certainly return to the ice as he did in the regular season and not rely almost entirely on the excellent Fleury.

The other series of the Western Conference ...

Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche (4-2)

The Avalanche after a good race 3 failed to replicate and enforce the field factor in race 4 where the Predators in the 3-2 year, race 5 saw a new goalie for the Colorado team with Hammond who went to replace a non-brilliant Bernier and was a good choice given the excellent backup race in that of Nashville where his team managed to impose itself with a score of 2-1. With the possibility to force race 7 the Avs have resurfaced in Hammond that this time nothing has been able against a Nashville concentrated and able to capitalize every opportunity to close the series with a net 5-0 away.

Winnipeg Jets vs Minnesota Vikings (4-1)

After the six goals suffered by the Jets in race 3 Hellebuyck has completely closed the gate to the Wild who have not been able to score a goal in the following two games. Winnipeg has been superior in every field of play and with a goalie of this level (in my opinion candidate number one at Venzina trophy) never say never in the playoffs where you know the goalie are much more the difference than in the regular season.

Anaheim Ducks vs. San Jose Sharks (0-4)

After the first three races dominated by the Sharks the epilogue was clear to everyone now and even though Perry and company have tried to the bottom to reassemble the difference between them and the hated rivals was too much to fill. Race 4 was perhaps the most fought but also in that the Sharks were in command right away risking little and thus bringing home a qualification in the second round more than deserved given the quality of hockey expressed by northern Californians.

Considerations!!!

The Western conference for years is known to be the most physical and the hardest and is therefore also the least spectacular from an aesthetic point of view and this year has made no difference for the first round. The only thing that made the difference was the gap between the teams involved and the consequent competitiveness of the series (all finished much earlier than the Eastern). This in my opinion has a little taken away from the Western conference, that especially neutral fans have preferred to see the show offered by Crosby & Co. or that of the Boston vs Toronto series culminated in a wonderful race 7 to heart. Best wishes and hope is that the second round saw the high level of the teams involved can give as well as physicality and beaten by orbi also many goals and exciting actions that can make us stay awake even late at night.

MLB GAMES PICKS 26/4/18

Thursday, April 26

Fast Start for the Cards

The St. Louis Cardinals fifteen years have accustomed us to always be at the top and for how the MLB is structured is a really difficult thing if you do not do crazy shopping in pinestripe style. And after a couple of seasons quite disappointing (in any case above the 500 mark) the cardinals and still have a lot of pressure, the pressure that comes from their condition, the fact that the cubes are clearly lowered and also the fact that the level of the division it is among the highest in the MLB except for the derelicts Reds. The same reds who suffered due consecutive trajectory from the cardinals bringing their fight against the defeats against San Luigi eleven consecutive game, which happened only once in 1949. The start of the team of Missouri had been a little hesitant my timing is over that the planning has been played much better underestimated on paper such as the Mets in New York and D-Backs at home, such as Wainwright, Pham, Gregerson, Holland and Gyorko. In spite of everything, the Cardinals managed to react well and usually come to find some excellent young replacements able to perform discreetly at Majors level like Harrison Bader and Jack Flaherty. The cards are literally divided into two words: who really beats and really well who can hardly see the ball. In the first category there is the general on the field Yadier Molina who besides is the best catcher defensively speaking of all time is also able to beat .313 with 6 HR and 16 RBI, the surprise Josè Martinez, Tommy Pham and Paul DeJong for a question of homerun. In the second category we end up many of the players entered in the last two years see Fowler, Ozuna but also Kolten Wong and Matt Carpenter were definitely inconsistent to the pot. Obviously it is the first games and counting that many of them have been played in cold climates that we know is not that the batsmen have to wait to draw the first conclusions so as not to fall into mere errors of assessment.
The pitching stuff led by Carlos Martinez (an ER in the last 27 innings played) is my top 5 warning in the MLB with excellent prospects for the future given the low average age of its key members. The rotation composed by Martinez, Wainwright, Weaver, Mikolas and Wacha does not seem to suffer at all from the departure of Lynn, indeed compared to last year has acquired consistency and awareness in their own means. The bullpen is full of young talents and on all stands Hicks a right relief that in minors has made the starter that contains an arsenal to say the least electric fastball even at 102 mph seasoned by a slider around the mid-80s with which it is was able to not suffer any more points this season in over 11 innings. When St. Louis is able to find the Netherlands and Gregerson on their usual levels recovering them totally from their injuries will certainly have a competitive bullpen in the key post-season.
the first trends say that the cardinals are very entrusted to the homeruns to score points but it is also an average hit of a shark that puts them in the middle of this ranking at the MLB level, but the pitchers rely more on groundball than on the to preserve the arm of their starters in view of the final ride and this is in contradiction with the MLB trends that see more and more launchers in the upper part of the strike zone to look for the strikeout.
With a record of 13-8 and the first post in the NL Central the Cardinals can safely stay above 60000 and keep this place in spite of the team being Brewers and Cubs rather than the Pirates remain very insidious and do not make life easy giving them life at a sprint that you will occupy until the end of September.
