NHL playoffs: Washington Capitals 2 NY Islanders 1 Game 7 recap and analysis

1st period

Both teams felt the pressure for the meaning of this game 7, them have been more committed to destroy the opposite plays than built their own ones. The 1st period has been very physical with an hard for checking by both teams, by the way Washington has been the one who produced the only scoring chances of the game especially with scrambling puck in their offensive zone or producing with shots from the blue line.

2nd period

The 2nd period started in the same way of the 1st one and it continued until the half part of it, The only Isles scoring chance came from Green who shot the puck 1 on 1 from the goal crease against Holtby who blocked it then it has been all Caps time 1st with Glencross who redirected a shot in front of the net, Niskanen shot the puck from the blue line and tried to find someone in front of it but it didn't happen so less than a minute left Ward found a scrambling puck and push it under the Halak's legs for the 1st score of the game.

3rd period

With the visitors trailing by a goal and the need to at least tied it the game has become more fun than the previous periods. After 3 minutes the Isles scored a goal with Nielsen due to a mistake by Holtby who didn't make an easy stop alet the puck go across the goaline, the Caps since that moment got the best chances they went close to score twice before scoring the game winning goal, 1st time with Beagle with a redirected puck but Halak stopped it then Browner got free and shot right in front of the net but again the Isles' goal has been ready to block it something that didn't happen later on Kutznezov slap shot after a very good personal play right across the goal crease. NY tried to tied the game but they never came close and Washington learned the defensive zone well for the remaining time.


Washington deserved to win this game 7 producing the bestscoting chances even without a good contribution by Backstrom and Ovechkin that along with Tavares has been very well controlled by the defenses, Caps defense limited the Isles offense so well not only in this game but in all the series and this made the essential difference between the 2 teams. The Isles suffered so much the Caps forechecking and the defensive discipline something that aggravated the NY's problems shown at the end of the regular season.
