NFL: Chicago Bears 14 Detroit Lions 20 recap and analysis

After getting into the postseason thanks to the Eagles loss in Washington on saturday, the Lions visited the struggling Bears at Soldier Field. Coming off a gutsy performance last monday at home against New Orleans, Chicago went to this game with a new QB, as Jay Cutler was bench instead of Jimmy Clausen, the 27th guy out of Notre Dame.
Clausen started the game with a quick 3 and out, and Stafford got the ball back, as it was Reggie Bush in the Lions backfield and not Joique Bell. Stafford came out throwing and found Bush then Megatron up the middle. But the Bears D showed up and on a 3rd and 5 at midfield, Allen sacked the Lions QB and Detroit had to punt it away. Chicago didn’t do anything with football, as Matt Forte was well stopped by the Lions pass rushers, and Detroit got the ball back. The Lions threw again a lot on this drive, as Stafford found WR Tate 2 straight time to move the change up the middle. Then, a big 4th and 5, Bush got the ball at his shoes on a screen play and the former Saints gained 21 huge yards to enter the Bears 13. Bush got the ball back but this time on the ground, and thanks to an inside run to his left, he scored a big TD. The Bears started their new drive with some good gains by Forte, who is so good at both running and catching. But Clausen was not on his game, and he completed with WR Jeffery on a big 3rd down. But DT Suh stripped the pass from the new QB and an offensive pass interference by TE Bennett ended the drive on a 4 down and 1. Stafford drove his team well but he made a huge mistake, as he escaped the pressure from the D line but under throw WR Fuller and Vereen picked the ball in the end zone. The Bears went 3 and out but again Stafford couldn’t kill the game, as he tried to find WR Tate on the Bears 18, but SS Mundy covered Tate very well and picked Stafford again. The Detroit defense was all over the Bears and Clausen made anything with ball, but thanks to an amazing play, the momentum changed. With under a min in the 1st half, Chicago punted away and Jeremy Ross let the ball drop, but the ball bounced of him and the Bears special team recovered him in the Lions red zone. And Clausen made Detroit pay, as he found Forte on a superb lob pass for a nice screen play : 7-7 was the score at the half.
Detoit got the ball to start the 2nd period, and RB Bush was once again good, as he caught a nice pass by his QB. On a play of this drive, lineman Raiola stepped I think intentionally on the ankle of Ferguson, who was forced to leave the field. Matt Prater kicked a 39 yard field goal to make this game a 10-7 game. Clausen put up a superb drive to answer the field goal, as he earned by himself some 3rd down. He found both WR Jeffery and Wilson, but on a 4rd down, the Lions special team made another mistake, as the refs called a roughing the kicker against Detroit. Chicago too advantage and on a 3rd and 6 at the Lions 20, Clausen found WR Jeffery on a superb throw to the outside, as CB Slay was totally dominate on the play by the Bears WR. Detroit got the ball and drive up to a possible field goal, but the Prater attempt was blocked by Theo Ratliff and the game was still 14-10 Bears. But Detroit didn’t give up and quickly stop the Bears. On a 3rd and 1O to the Lions 10, CB Jennings was called for a pass interference on a bomb throw by Stafford to WR Fuller. This 46 yard penalty was huge, as on the next play, RB Bell first bounced to his O line but escaped on his left to score a big TD. After Clausen did nothing with the football, Stafford led his team to a Prater field goal, as the Lions leaded 20 to 14. The Bears drove well and on a 2nd and 2, Clausen ran for a first down but was absolutely drill on the head by DE Ezekiel Ansah. Tempers flared and later, on a 4 and 10, Clausen tried to go to his playmaker Alshon Jeffery but he was well double covered and SS Quin intercepted the Bears QB.
This was a tense division game, but as the postseason come, the Lions D is playing great football. Stafford was not so great, but the Detroit running game was very effective and the return of Reggie Bush will really help this team down the stretch. I give my MVP to Bush, as the former Dolphins was really effective in both running and catching ; he had 98 yard in total and a TD.
