NFL: Cleveland Browns 24 Indianapolis Colts 25 recap and analysis

Cleveland was hosting Indianapolis on sunday afternoon, as the Browns were still in the race for a postseason berth but they needed absolutely this game to stay close to teams like Pittsburgh, Baltimore…
Each teams started the game with 2 quick drives, but WR Benjamin made a nice punt return to put Cleveland at midfield. On a nice play action to the left, QB Hoyer found his TE Cameron for a 20 yards gain to enter to Indy 20. Cameron was out the last 5 weeks and that’s maybe an explication of Hoyer poor play recently, as the TE is with WR Gordon the reliable guy for the former Michigan State QB. RB Crowell ran a good inside one, but on a 2 and 6 close to the red zone, Hoyer tried to find second TE Dray on an inside double move, but he was picked by the former Browns SS Adams in the end zone : Hoyer has now 8 interceptions in his last 5 ballgames. Next drives resulted in some 3 and outs, but thanks to a superb punt by Lanning, the Browns were able to get Luck inside his 10 to start his drive. After 2 straight passes missed, Luck was drilled by OLB Kruger and ILB Robertson recovered the football in the end zone for a TD. The Browns continued to be great against the Colts offense, as Luck was forced to leave the field with some 3 and outs. Cleveland was not so so great on offense too, but RB West and Crowell marched than the field but the Browns missed a field goal, field goal who could make this one a 10-0 game. And Pep Hamilton offense took advantage, as Luck ran for a first down, then find TE Fleener on a double move out of the slot. The former Stanford QB found his RB Boom Herron for a big 26 yards gain and on a big 3 and 8, the 3rd year guy got ouf the pocket and with his targets all well covered, he decided to do it by himself and he scored a TD on a 13 yards run. Cleveland got the ball back, and on a fake jet sweep, Hoyer overthrow WR Gabriel as the rookie was wide open and he would probably scored on the play. But Hoyer bounced back and found WR Benjamin for a 27 gain to get at midfield with 4:40 left in the 1st half. Terrance West ran a nice inside run and WR Hawkins catched a nice pass from his QB on a nice slant to the outside. On the next play, thanks to a nice play action, WR Gabriel got to the red zone on a screen play. Then, RB Crowell score a nice TD out of a pistol formation : 14-7 was the score at the half.
After losing the ball on the 1st play of scrimmage, the Colts stopped Cleveland, but once again P Lanning pushed away Indy to his 1 yard line, as Moore recovered the ball for the Browns. The Colts got a first down, but thanks to a superb CB blitz by Buster Skrine, Justin Gilbert, the rookie CB intercepted Luck, who was trying to find WR Wayne on a slant. The 8th overall pick from this year Draft got in to the end zone for a Pick 6, Cleveland leaded this one 21-7. Indy got the ball back and after a pretty good drive, Vinatieri kicked a field goal. Pagano defense stop Hoyer and on the next drive, Luck was starting to find WR Hilton, as the 2 top guy in Indy offense connected on a 42 yard TD on a superb double move to freeze CB Joe Haden, who eliminate Hilton from the game in the 1st period. Luck missed the 2pt conversion but the momentum changed in this game. Once again, Hoyer couldn’t get a first down and the Colts reduced their lead thanks to an other field goal, to make this a 21-19 ballgame. Cleveland was again not able to complete a first down, but the defense of the Browns showed up again, as SS Leonhard intercepted Luck, as the former 1st overall pick was trying to find Hilton on a cross route. The Browns couldn’t take advantage and they had to settle for a field goal. With just over 2:00 to go, at midfield, Luck tried to connect with TE Allen up the middle, but the refs called doubtful pass interference on CB Skrine. The Colts marched down the fied but they were stop on 3rd down and inches. Pep Hamilton offense handled the ball to Boom Herron, who moved the chain after collapse on his linemen to pass the orange line. Then Luck found WR Hilton in the end zone on a quick slant, as Indianapolis had his first lead of the day, at 25-24. With 3 timeouts and just under 30 seconds to go, Cleveland had a chance, but Hoyer couldn’t move the Browns in to field goal range, as he couldn’t connect with Gordon on a long pass.
This game was well played by the two defense, but it’s really to make a decision for the Cleveland staff, as Hoyer is really unable to lead his offense. I think it’s maybe time for the rookie Manziel to get a shot at the staring job, as the Browns will host Cincinnati next week. My MVP to this game is WR Hilton, who totally overplayed CB Pro-Bowler Joe Haden in the second half and who finished with 10 catches for 150 yards and 2 TD.
