NFL Divisional Round: New England Patriots 27 KC Chiefs 20 recap and analysis

The Patriots started with the possession of the ball and thanks to a drive made only by medium and short passes to Gronkowski and Edelman they have been able to score a TD with Gronkowski who aligned outside like a WR beat the coverage of Berry with a comeback route and a back shoulder catch, the Chiefs answered back partially with a good balanced drive made by read options and short passes that brought them close to the Pats redzone where they have been forced to kick a FG to cut the deficit to 4 points. The Pats scored again after a 98 yards drive where they moved the ball well Brady QB sneak. The second half started badly for the visitors due to the fumble of Knile Davis recovered by Hightower, Pats' offense used that opportunity at the best way possible thanks to another effective drive on the air again targeting Gronk and Edelman, once close to the Chiefs end zone Brady found Gronk aligned again outside as a WR on a stop and go route to beat Berry for his second TD of the game. The Chiefs reacted with a very good drive on both running and passsing game but once in Pats redzone they have been forced to convert a 4th down and they did it, after that Wilson received a precise pass from Smith in the endzone to score his first TD of the game, on the other side their defense have been able just to limit the damage giving up 3 points to a Gostowski FG, Smith on the following drive missed the 4th down conversion that should extend their drive, fortunately for them their defense got the ball back but KC wasted time on their last drive and even if they scored a rushing TD with West on a pitch option so the Chiefs have been forced to make an onside kick but Gronk caught it and ended the game sending the home team to their 5th consecutive championship game.

The Chiefs played a solid game, especially on defense where they have been very good against the running game and they limited the damages against a Pats' offense that at home is very good, Gronkowski and Edelman made the difference playing both a great game, KC's problems came from the offense that didn't produce anything in the first half and in my opinion Smith lack of precision let them lose along with injury problems that took Maclin out of the game and like the rest of the season Charles absence hasn't been filled by West and Ware, another mistake by Smith has been targeting few time Kelce who should produce a way more if he would be targeted more, Avant played an outstanding game (the best on his offense). The Pats' defense played very good especially on mixing blitzes and along with a great all around performance by their safeties

MVP: Gronkowski
