NE Patriots 27 NY Jets 25 recap

For the 3rd year in a row, Rex Ryan went into Foxboro to play against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots on a Thursday Night Football game. Coming off a good road win in Buffalo last sunday, the Pats were looking to take care of the struggling Jets, who were losers of 5 games in a row. This game was also really special for Darrelle Revis, the former Jets, who was facing his former team for the 1st time since they traded him to Tampa Bay before last season. « Revis Island », the 5 time Pro-Bowler was the big offseason acquisition in Massachusetts, with the role to cover big opponent WR, and on Thursday this guy was Eric Decker, the best WR on the Jets squad. Without Stevan Ridley, the Pats were looking to get a huge performance by the arm of Tom Brady, with Shane Vereen to get some production on the running game. And on the 1st drive, that combination worked perfectly, with Vereen receiving a 49 yard bomb by Brady in the end zone. Brady was very good last night, completing 20 passes for 261 yards and 3 TD, two of them to Shane Vereen. The Michigan Wolverines product was finding his top targets, like Brandon LaFell who had 4 receptions, like his old reliable TE Rob Gronkoswki who catches 4 balls too and like Julian Edelman, Brady’s top targeted option who had a decent game with 4 grabs but who drop some balls. Vereen and the rookie from Notre Dame Jonas Gray took care of the running game, with 55 earned yards in 14 carries. Danny Amendola, one Brady's top WR last year catched his 1st pass since a while and scored an important TD late in the game, to make this game an 9pt contest. Yes that was an important TD, and that because the Jets played a good game, highlighted by their running game, in particular Chris Ivory, the former Saints. The Texas native destroy the New England defensive line, running for 107 yards in 21 carries and a scored a TD in the 3rd quarter to give them the lead (19-17). Chris Johnson was also good and productive, with 61 yards in just 13 runs : in fact, the Jets run for 218 big yards in this AFC East showdown. Geno Smith, the struggling second year QB out of West Virginia was really not bad, completing 20 of 34 passes for 226 yards and 1 TD, to Jeff Cumberland in the 4th quarter. Smith runs also for 37 yards and really benefit from the great running game to stay in this game late, but he was not able to complete the 2 points conversion to Amaro. The Jets had a chance to win, with Nick Folk, their kicker who had a shot at a 58 yard field goal, but the kick was blocked by New England, who won 27 to 25.
The Patriots are now 5-2 on the season and they are on the top of the AFC East. The Jets have after Week 7 a record of 1 victory for 6 loses. They will look to end this 6 game losing streak in two weeks in Kansas City : yes, Rex Ryan will have a tone of work to do in the next few days. Brady and New England will stay at home next week, and they will host Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears.
